Appendix 2.    Church Registers

Certificates of birth, marriage and death have only been issued since Civil Registration began in 1837. Prior to this date, records of baptism, marriage and burial can only be obtained from church registers some of which are held in the archives of county records offices.

Aldborough, Minskip and Skelton are now in North Yorkshire, but in earlier times were part of the West Riding of Yorkshire.

Aldborough Parish Church registers are filed at the of North Yorkshire County Record Office (NYCRO) at Northallerton with the exception of the burial registers after 1852 which are retained at the church.

Ripon Cathedral registers are filed at the NYCRO.

Some of the registers of the Chapelry of Skelton and Studley Royal are filed at the NYCRO and the remainder are retained at the churches.

The burial registers of St. Peter’s Church, Midville are retained at the church.
