 Grandchildren of William Marston, Children of Edward Marston

Mary E (Dolly) Middleton nee Marston (born Towers) (1868-1901)

Mary married Albert E Middleton. By 1891 they were living at Haworth Lane, Yeadon and had a son Edward. Mary and Albert’s family is shown below.

The Family of Mary E Middleton nee Marston (Towers) (1868-1901)

By 1901 the family were at North Bierley. Mary was dead by this time. By 1911 Albert is married to Marion, their marriage occuring around 1901.

Edward Marston Middleton emigrated to Australia in 1911. In 1914 he married Mary Florence  Colbourne. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force in 1914 to fight in the First World War.  Edward's military record is available in the appendix. There is a photograph of Edward Marston Middleton in the appendix taken in 1911.

His wife died in 1929. There is a possibility that Edward remarried in 1931.

William Marston (1870-1949)

William married his first wife, Mary Beanland on June 5th 1897 in Yeadon. In the 1901 census William was living at 2 Swains Hill Terrace in Yeadon with his first wife Mary. By 1911 they are living at 5 South Parade, Yeadon and William is a wool blender. His first wife Mary died on 27th March 1913 of phitisis and exhaustion. William was present at the death. There are photographs of William and Mary in the appendix. Probate was granted at Wakefield on 22nd December to William Marston. Her effects were £350.

William later married a second time to Mary Isabella Toakley on 25th January 1919. William gave his occupation as willeyer.  (A willeyer is a person who throws handfulls of wool or hair, hemp or flax tow, etc., on to brattice or other feed apparatus of willeying machine, which separates fibres, and breaks up their natural matted state, and shakes out dirt and foreign matter therefrom, in preparation for carding; sometimes also blends materials together in process of willeying.) 

They lived at 2 Granville Terrace Yeadon, according to electoral registers. William died on September 8th 1949. In 1965 Isabella was living at Flat 8, Chapel Lane, Yeadon.

George Marston (1871-1949)

George was born in Thornton in 1871. He attended school at School Hill, Yeadon and later at South View. He was a member of the choir at the Mission Room at Chapel Hill.

He followed his siblings into the woollen trade at Waterloo Mill, Pudsey. By 1901 George had become a carter to William Reynard. After marrying Lily in 1903 he lived at Tang Cottage. Later George was to take on the small holding of Grange Farm, High Birstwith and become postman for the area of Birstwith, Kettlesing and Norwood in 1908. He held this post until retirement on 26th March 1943. George was a chapel steward for many years for the Kettlesing Methodist chapel, where he was a member of the choir for 52 years, a Sunday school teacher and superintendent for 50 years. A picture survives of George on his rounds at Elton Top. A picture of George Marston and his family also survives.

George died in 1949. He is buried with his wife and son Fred at Birstwith St. James. Fred's wife Phyllis Rosa is buried in an adjacent grave.

The Family of George Marston (1871-1949)

All the children were born at Tang Cottage, Box Chair, Tang.

In 1911 George lists his occupation as a corn dealer, on his own account and working at home, and auxilliary postman. The family is living at Box Chair.

There is a photograph in the appendix of George Marston and some of the family at Skegness.

Fred Marston (1873-1944)

In 1901 Fred Marston was living with his parent in laws at Felliscliffe. He was occupied as a fell waller. The couple had a daughter Annie Mabel according to the 1901 census. In 1911 he is living with his family at Swincliffe Side, Felliscliffe as a farmer

The birth certificates for the children are available in the appendix. All the children were born at Swincliffe Side, Felliscliffe. Fred described himself as a farmer on the birth certificates for all the children, except Arthur. On Arthur’s birth certificate Fred described himself as a stonemason. Mabel was known to be a nurse and Arthur had considerable skill as an artist. David Lawrence was a joiner and undertaker in Brighouse, as evidenced in the phone books of 1939 and 1940.

Harriot of Thornhills Farm, Clifton, Brighouse died on 5th March 1940 at 60 Granny Hall Lane, Brighouse. Probate was granted on 20th April at Wakefield to Fred Marston, farmer. Her effects were £485 0s 10d.

Robinson Marston (1876-1958)

In the 1901 census Robinson was staying with his aunt, Elizabeth Beetham. Robinson emigrated from London to New Zealand on the ship ARAWA on the 21 August 1907. Robinson Marston later moved to Rockdale in Australia where he died in 1958. It is believed that he never married. There are photographs of Robinson in the appendix.

John Henry Marston (1878-1878)

John Henry died in infancy in 1878.

Emily Etty Hardaker nee Marston (1880-1965)

Emily Marston married Oswald Hardaker in December quarter 1901 in Wharfedale. They had a child Nellie Hardaker born September quarter 1901. There is some confusion with the date in the family bible.

Emily and Nellie emigrate with Sam Marston on the 23rd September 1911. Emily died in Sutherland Australia on 17th March 1965. There are a number of photographs of Emily & Nellie in the appendix.

Frank Marston (1881-1970)

Frank emigrated from London to New Zealand on the ship IONIC on the 16th September 1909. Frank Marston later moved to Rockdale in Australia where he died in 1970. It is believed that he never married. There are photographs of Frank in the appendix.

Sam Marston (1883-1964)

Sam emigrated from London to Sydney, Australia on the ship NORSEMAN on the 23rd September 1911. Sam emigrated with Sarah Marston, his mother and his step sister Hilda. Sam Marston settled in Rockdale in Australia where he died in 1964. He married Maud Hartley in 1920 who was born in Henshaw.

Sam saw active service in the First World War, joining up in 1915. His military record can be found in  Appendix 3.

Sam died in 1964, Maud died in 1958. There are photographs of Sam, both in Australia and in England in 1991 before he emigrated.

John married Teresa Agnes Rowe in 1946.

Hilda James nee Marston (1891-)

Hilda emigrated to Austarlia  on the ship NORSEMAN on the 23rd September 1911. Hilda Marston settled in Rockdale, Australia where she married Harry James in 1916. Harry James died in 1953, whilst Hilda predeceased him in 1945.
