The Family of Edward Birkinshaw and Hannah Marston (1845-)

Edward was a stonemason by trade. The family were living in Felliscliffe in 1871 and Bradford from at least 1881. Edward died before 1891. In 1901 Sarah is married to John Gerard Hogan and living at home with Hannah and Matilda. Hannah died in 1918.

 Edward Marston (1846-1889)

Edward Marston married twice and produced two sets of children. His first family with Hannah Towers is shown below.

The First Family of Edward Marston (1846-1889)

In 1861 Hannah Towers was listed as being a domestic servant in Hampsthwaite. Dolly (Mary E) was born at Kettlesing.

In 1871 Edward was in Thornton with his first wife and Mary E Towers as his daughter. It is believed that Mary E Towers became Dolly (Mary E) Marston.

His second family with Sarah Etty is shown below.

The Second Family of Edward Marston (1846-1889)

Sarah Etty was the daughter of John Etty, a farmer from Thornton le Clay, as shown in the 1861 census

Edward had many occupations. His earliest occupation was recorded as a cordwainer in the census of 1861. At the time of his first marriage he listed his occupation as shoemaker. Ten years later at the time of his second marriage he was listed as coachman (for Mr Coupland). Daniel Coupland lived at the Manor House, Yeadon, also known as Yeadon Hall. By the time of his death his occupation was as a labourer at a brewery. There is a copy of Edward's remembrance card in the family documents appendix.

In the 1901 census William was in Yeadon working as a boot & shoe Finisher, George was a carter living in Birstwith, Fred was a fence waller living in Felliscliffe, Robinson was a Wool Comber living in Bradford, Emily was living at home in Yeadon with Sarah and was a wool twister, Frank was also at home in Yeadon working as a building apprentice, and Sam was at home in Yeadon working as a woollen spinner.

The dates of birth and deaths of the children were recorded in the Family Bible. The birth dates were as follows

The dates for their deaths were as follows

Edward pre-deceased Sarah who later married a cousin of Edward, Samuel Henry Marston, son of Thomas Marston. They produced a single child Hilda Marston born 1891 in Wharfedale, as shown below.

The Second Family of Sarah Marston nee Etty (1859-1936)

In the 1891 census Sarah and Samuel were living in Yeadon. Samuel's occupation was Wagonette Proprietor.  By 1901 Sarah appears to be present at one address in Yeadon but Samuel Henry was at a different address as a boarder living with his sister Mary Greenwood at her house in Town Square Yeadon.

The 1911 census has very many interesting features. Firstly, Samuel Henry is not present at the family home in Yeadon, yet Sarah is cited as the wife, not head of household. Secondly, Sarah has had 7 live children, of which only 4 survived. Finally, Emily and Edward Marston Middleton are cited as grandaughter and grandson of Sarah. Were the Middletons adopted by Sarah?

Sarah and Hilda moved to Rockdale Australia on 23rd September 1911. Sarah died in Australia in 1936.
