By 1861 he was listed as being at Hew Green. At this time Edward and Robert were staying with their grandfather, Robert Robinson at Longscales. Edward was listed as a cordwainer whilst Robert was a scholar. At some time after 1867 William and his family moved to 8 Low Town, Thornton. In the 1871 census for Thornton, William and his family were at 8 Low Town except for Edward. The eldest children on the census, Elizabeth and Robinson, were worsted weavers, whilst  Maria was a spinner. By 1881 the family was at Low Town Houses in Thornton with William a machine overlooker. His children Emily, Matilda and Ada were worsted weavers and wool comber. His grandson Robinson was also at that address at the time of the census.

The Family of Edward Marston (1829-1911)

Susannah Grange was the daughter of Robert Grange of Thornthwaite, as detailed in the 1841 census. By 1851 she was a servant in the Bramley family household at Norwood cum Clifton.

By the time of the 1861 census Edward had established himself as a farmer at Tang House with his family and a servant. Tang House was quite an important house according to Grainge, describing it as of yeoman class. The house was originally in possession of the influential Bilton family until the death of Miss Ann Bilton on August 12th 1819. Following Ann Bilton’s death the house came into the possession of Bilton Josephus Wilson.

Edward and his family were still resident at Tang House in the 1871 and 1881 censuses. At that time Edward's family were the only Marston family left in Birstwith. By 1891 the children had all left except for Mary Ellen (Fawcett), who was by then widowed, and Charles Frederick. Again this family was the only one registered in Birstwith. In 1901 and 1911 Edward was still living at Tang House with his wife, widowed daughter Mary Ellen Fawcett and his sister in law Margaret Hebden.

Edward and Susannah are buried in Birstwith Churchyard. Their son Robert is also buried there.
