Joseph Marston (1870-)

Cundall Marston (1870-1947)

In the 1891 census Cundall was working as a servant at the corn mill of  Tom Barker at Crags Mill. In Q3 1898 Cundall married Edith in Wharfedale. In 1901 he was a carpenter in Clifton cum Norwood and by 1911 he was a general labourer. Cundall died in 1947 in Staincliffe.

There is a photograph of Cundall Marston and a photograph of Cundall and Edith's grave in the photographs appendix.

 Samuel Marston (1874-1921)

Samuel married Lily Gott in Q2 1895 in N Bierley. In the 1901 census he was a steam chain driver in Bramley. In 1911 they have moved to 36 Club Lane, Rodley. Samuel is a crane driver at a crane manufacturer. They had two children as shown below.

The Family of Samuel Marston (1874-)

Samuel died on 4th August 1921 at 128 Old Rd, Farsley. Administration granted on 7th Septemeber at Wakefield to Lily Marston, widow. His effects were £358 19s.

Mary Elizabeth Marston (1896-) married Thomas Waite on Q2 1917 in N Bierley. James William married Bertha Perkins in Q3 1923 in N Bierley.

Harriet Marston (1876-)

Harry Marston (1877-1877)

Hannah Leach nee Marston (1878-)

Hannah married Joseph Leach in Q3 1898 in Keighley. Hannah had a child Harry Marston before marriage and four children with Joseph (+one who died), as shown below.

The Family of Joseph Leach and Hannah Marston (1878-)

Interestingly the birthplace for Hannah is Norwood, Surrey in the 1901 census. This is clearly wrong as there are no Harry Marston births in Surrey in the years around 1897, whereas there is an entry for Harry in Wharfedale.

Ellen Sawford nee Marston (1880-)

Ellen married Robert Sawford  on 23 December 1899 at Fewston. The couple do not appear on any 1901 census for England but that may be due to spelling difficulties. There are four Sawford births in Wharfedale in the period 1900-1910 and none in Wharfedale between 1880 and 1900. These births may be reasonably assumed to be attributable to the couple.

Robert Marston (1883-)

Robert married Ethel Mary Wood in the June quarter of 1906. There were at least seven children in the ensuing family, as shown below.

The Family of Robert Marston (1883-)

In 1911 Robert, Ethel and the first three children are living at Spinksburn and Robert is a roadman. Robert enlisted during the First World War. He joined the Royal Engineers (Railway Troops) and qualified as a steam roller driver. His military record can be found in the appendix.

The young Ethel had the misfortune in 1938, on her way home from church, to find the body of Margaret Peel who had been murdered in her shop in Fewston. A full account of the murder may be found in an excellent article by Julie Craven.

Martha Marston (1887-)

Martha was boarded out with John and Ann Spence at Spinksburn and later Braeme House, as indicated in the 1891, 1901 and 1911 censuses.
