James Marston (1846-1909)

In 1861 James was a carter for James Nathanson in Guiseley.

In 1868 James Marston married Mary Jane Cundall at Bishophill, York. Mary Jane was born around 1848. She was listed in the 1851 census at her father's house at Stockton in the Forest near York. The family of James is shown below.

The Family of James Marston (1846-1909)

Whilst Cundall was baptised in 1872, he was born Q4 1870 in the Ripon registration district.

Mary Jane died in 1887 and is buried in Fewston churchyard. James is recorded as a widower on the 1891 census. It is believed that Mary Jane died in childbirth, giving birth to Martha. Martha was boarded out with John and Ann Spence at Spinksburn and later Brame House.

James was innkeeper at the Seven Stars Inn, Brame Lane at Clifton cum Norwood. In the 1901 census only his son Robert was still at home. James had a housekeeper and had several navvy guests, presumably working on the reservoirs.

Sarah Ann Marston (1848-)

Nothing is known about Sarah Ann Marston.

Joseph Marston (1850-1916)

Joseph lived with his mother Martha. The 1881 census for Norwood shows Joseph living with his mother  who was by then aged 65. However in the 1901 and 1911 censuses he was living in Weston and had a family.

The family of Joseph Marston (1851-1916)

Joseph Marston married Hannah Harrison in the December Quarter of  1885 in Wharfedale. In the 1881 census there was a Hannah Harrison general servant at Low Hall, Middleton with a family named Alderton.

In the 1891 census for Weston, Joseph and Hannah were at Midge Hall with their children. The first child was Louisa Harrison aged 12, born Pateley Bridge, which does not fit in with the marriage date. In the 1881 census there was a family of Harrisons headed by John Harrison of Norwood Bottom, Clifton cum Norwood. Their granddaughter Louisa Harrison was aged 2 and was born at Pateley Bridge.

Joseph died on 14th October 1916. Probate was granted at Wakefield on 28th December to Harry Marston, farmer, and Robert Marston, cowman. His effects were £1042.

Hannah Taylor nee Marston (1852-)

Hannah Marston marries William Taylor in the December quarter of 1877 in Wharfedale. In 1881 they were living at Brat House in Clifton with their son William. By 1891 Hannah was head of household at 17 Cambridge St, Otley with son William and daughter Elizabeth. In 1901 she was housekeeper for her brother Robert.

The Family of Hannah Taylor nee Marston (1853-)

This family suffered a great tragedy in November 1887. On 24th November 1887 William Taylor opened fire on his wife with his gun. THe shot missed Hannah, but killed the 10 week infant Annie. In the police siege that followed William Taylor shot Superintendent Thomas Birkill at point blank range, killing him. At the trial in February 1888 William Taylor was found guilty of the murders, but insane. He was sentenced to be detained at her Majesty's pleasure and spent the rest of his life in Broadmoor. The full story of this sad affair is contained on separate pages.

Emma Elizabeth Ward nee Marston (1858-)

Emma Marston married Charles Ward at Swinsty in 1874 and had eight children, as shown below.

The family of Emma Marston

In 1881 the family were living at Gill Becks, Blubberhouses, a farm. Charles Ward died between the 1881 and 1891 censuses. A census for the family in 1901 has not as yet been found. Etty (Letty?) appears to be also known as Charlotte. In 1911 Charles E Ward is working as a farm labourer in Denton.

Samuel Marston (1859-1859)

Samuel died in infancy.

Sam Marston (1860-1919)

Samuel was a farm servant for his brother in law, Charles Ward, according to the 1881 census. In 1885 he married Agnes Mashinter at Boroughgate, Otley. The couple produced the family shown below.

The Family of Sam Marston (1860-1919)

Martha and Robert were born at Norwood, whilst the remaining children were born at Farnley.

By 1891 the family was living and farming at Naple Ing, Bingley. (Naple Ing is almost certainly a contraction of Knapley Ing, a farm on Rombalds Moor). In 1901 they were living at Hathenshaw, Denton.

Mary Elizabeth is mentioned in the 1891 census but disappears by 1901. A birth can be found for Mary Elizabeth but no death can be found in any part of Yorkshire. There is a separate birth entry for Eliza, making Eliza and Mary Elizabeth distinct siblings.

In 1911 the family is at Mead Hill, Holme and the family has increased. Sam is a farmer on his own account.

Robert Marston (1863-)

In 1881 Robert was a farm servant at William Marston's farm in Newall. By 1891 he was at home with his mother.

Robert married Ann Thackwray, twenty years his junior, on 18th June 1910. They had the family shown below.
