The birth of Martha Newby was recorded in the 5th November 1859 edition of the Malton Messanger "On the 28th ult., at Norton, the wife of Mr Geo. NEWBY of a daughter".

Lily Newby was the daughter of James Newby and Jane Bradley.

In 1881 James and his family are at Driffield Rd, Norton in Malton. By 1891 he has moved to Red House, Skipton Rd, Killinghall. James was a farmer. In the 1901 census James and family have moved to Flat Top House in Hampsthwaite, where James is a farmer and milk dealer. Robert has his own household by 1901 in Hampsthwaite village.
